South Beach, Mount Martha by Brett Pierce

ARTIST NOTES:
South Beach, Mount Martha

Our experience of the beach is more than a quick oil sketch. It's vast and expansive impressions of lazy days, warmth, light and colour under a baking sun and big sky. It's the soft, squeaky sand and the feel of cool, salty water. It's that switch-off from our everyday pressure and drudgery into timeless space, lazily absorbing details around us. We feel it, we taste it. It rewards across every stage of our life in different ways. It's quintessential Australian experience.
And this beach is so Melbourne.

ARTIST BIO

"It’s not enough to just encounter the world: we must decipher what it etches on our souls," (Brett Pierce, Beyond the Vapour Trail).

Brett Pierce began painting in oils in 1993, in the same year he began working in overseas aid - travelling to more than 70 countries over the last 32 years. This immersion into the lives of the world's most vulnerable and the restoration of beauty in art are somehow connected for him. Both are ways of learning to see and experience the world more deeply. Both are spiritual searches for inspiration in humanity and nature. And both opportunities to reach for something beautiful.

Initially he studied Australian tonalism. After experimenting with different styles he ultimately felt drawn to Contemporary Realism.

Intense travel has allowed very little time for painting, and until now, none of his paintings have been available for purchase although overseas offers emerged after two of his paintings were published in the 16th International ARC Salon finalists.

He also is a maker of fine musical instruments (harps, guitars) and author of Beyond the Vapour Trail (Transit Lounge Publishing, 2016 Book of the Year listing, ABR).
